23-01-12 Love Fitness Weekly Showcase

Thanks to everyone who submitted blog posts to last week’s Fitness showcase! It was great to read such a range of posts. Funny, factual, motivational, inspirational…there was something for everyone. Special mention goes to Life, Ninja Killer Cat and everything else, simply for managing to mention Bonnie Tyler, grated cheese and “curly wurly hairs” in a blog post about fitness!
Are you taking part in any fitness events for charity this year? Let us help you spread the word and raise awareness for your cause. I’ve decided to attempt my very first half-marathon in September to raise money for SAMH (The Scottish Association for Mental Health). This is a cause very close to my heart. SAMH is a wonderful charity and any money I raise will go towards the national programmes Get Active and Suicide Prevention. Given the significant part running has played in my battle against depression, it seems only right that my running should give something back to a mental health charity. 
Remember you can join the Love All Blogs community and become part of the Fitness group – you’re all welcome, whatever your level of fitness.

Blue Bear Wood – Getting fit, loosing weight … having fun!

This is the year I try and shift the last bit of baby weight and get fit.

Now considering I had 2 pregnancies one after the other (the 2nd being a multiple pregnancy) I don’t look bad given the no effort approach I’ve taken. I put it down to all the Yoga and Pilates that I did before I had children. I’m by no means over weight (mmm, actually that might not be true given the tightness of my jeans at the moment! Christmas was a little naughty)

Vegemitevix – The Unbearable Lightness of becoming

I wrote a blog post last year about how to lose one million kilos in a week. Funnily enough that blog post has had a huge amount of traffic over the past week as everyone gets back to their normal routine the equivalent of 50 Christmas puddings x 5 = heavier. That post wasn’t about weight loss, so much as it was about going home and wanting to look my best. This post is however about weight loss, and exercise and ritual pavement humiliation.

Very Busy Mamá – Running in style

Running in style

I’m a runner.

Okay, so I don’t jump out of bed and hit the pavement every single morning because “I can’t start my day without a run” but over the years I have come to enjoy the peace it brings me, the challenge, and the overall health and fitness part of it.

In fact, unless I am signed up and registered for race, or if my husband suggests we go out for a run together, I ain’t going anywhere!

Run Angel, Run – Working it out with Afro hair

I remember reading an article last year regarding the extremely high rate of Black women not exercising and as a result are dying younger from diseases such as high cholesterol, diabetes and heart problems. Which is very alarming. The main reason for this is the maintenance of our hair, which is even more disturbing. I work out almost every day, whether its my NTC class, running, weights or the gym and I have to say that it is very time consuming maintaining my hair afterward. But I could never imagine never working out again to solve that ‘problem’

Ok, so it would seem that the fates are conspiring for me to get fit this year. First, the wonderful folks at Next gave me the lovely Davina for Next gear to try out.

Then, the two people I know who actually HATE RUNNING MORE THAN ME, namely my lovely mum and the wonderful Cat from Yellow Days, BOTH suggested running the Race for Life with me. This is on my Day Zero Project list to do again so am keen to get it ticked off involved.

Fitnes is sold to women all wrong.

It should NOT be about “loosing a dress size in 10 days” or “getting into shape for Christmas parties or the beach”.

Fitness, in my opinion, should be about finding a way to move your body that you LOVE and that makes you feel good

It’s a rainy day today so instead of running I’m writing about it. I don’t actually mind running in the rain, but the last few times I’ve done it, I have gotten sick so I’ve decided to stay dry today and try again tomorrow.

It’s been about 18 months now since I first put on sneakers and hit the road and I thought that it’s time to summarise what I have learned about running so far.

Letters from your Mum – Head torch at the ready

Head torch at the ready

I’ve been running. Let’s just say it’s been a while. But this week I have been running in a head torch on, rendevous at 6am, in the dark, down a muddy hill sort of fashion.

This morning as I tried to encourage my body to keep up to speed with my out of control feet, as I avoided getting whipped in the face with a branch and side stepped tree stumps I felt like I was the opening scene for an episode of C.S.I.

Mummy..Mummy..MUM!! – Not a good start

Not a good start

So last week, I told you all about my big plans for getting fit. Was I convincing? I meant every word, yet somehow this week has not gone to plan at all.

I have managed to fit bits of exercise into my daily activities, but not as much as I wanted. I did race around the park with the kids twice though, even in the freezing cold.

Mari’s World – Keeping fit with my Fitpod!

My first note must go to my Slimpod and Fitpod! I couldn’t believe it on Day 3 when I went to the cupboard for a sweet snack I found myself turning my nose up at the open box of chocolate fingers (UNHEARD OF) turning my nose up at the last unopened box of Jaffa Cakes and passing on a chocolate from the tin. I actually stopped what I was doing and recognised the fact that the Slimpod was working.

At least daddy can cook… – The Bigger Picture

The Bigger Picture

My biggest achievement this week? A 25-minute run. It doesn’t sound like much, but it was a massive deal for me. The last time I went for a run was so long ago, I don’t remember it. It was well over six months ago.

Last weekend, I told myself I would go for a run on Tuesday. Tuesday came, and I laid my running gear out on the bed. I put my trainers in the hall. I procrastinated. A lot.
